Fire in Goshen kills man, destroys garage

GOSHEN

A representative from the Mahoning County Coroner’s office was called to the scene of a garage fire Thursday afternoon at a Country Club Drive home. George Vernon, assistant chief of the Damascus Fire Department, said it was a determined a man had died in the fire but he could not release the person’s name or any more information late Thursday.

Vernon said the one-car garage was unattached, and crews were called to the scene about 2:50 p.m. The garage and a car inside were destroyed, Vernon said. The cause for now is listed as undetermined, and the state fire marshal was called to investigate, Vernon said.

Schools test exam

Local schools are testing out a new version of a state exam Monday. Ohio is shifting to a computer approach to the Ohio Graduation Test next year instead of the pencil-and-paper test.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers is providing the language arts and math questions. The American Institute of Research is providing the science and social-studies questions.

School districts participating include Austintown, Jackson-Milton, South Range and West Branch. Testing is for students in grades three through 11. The scores will not be recorded this year.

Shooting indictment

WARREN

A Trumbull County grand jury indicted Darren L. Lee, 27, of West Avenue Northwest on charges that could result in a prison sentence of 20 years for purportedly firing a weapon at people delivering newspapers.

Lee will be arraigned March 31 in common pleas court on two counts of felonious assault and single counts of heroin possession, cocaine possession, carrying a concealed weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Police said Lee fired shots at a 43-year-old man and his 18-year-old daughter on West Avenue at 6:35 a.m. Jan. 30 as they were delivering newspapers.

Stand Up Against Racism at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

The YWCA of Youngstown, 25 W. Rayen Ave., is hosting a Stand Against Racism event from 8:30 to 11 a.m. April 25 at Youngstown State University’s Kilcawley Center. Participation is free.

The event features screening of the movie, “An Ordinary Hero: The True Story of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland” followed by a discussion with Mulholland, whose civil-rights activities in the early 1960s as a white teen and young woman alienated her from her family and landed her in jail.
