Truck driver cited

YOUNGSTOWN

Police cited the driver of a tractor-trailer that jackknifed on Interstate 680 about 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, blocking traffic in the southbound lanes. Gary Stayer, 60, was cited for failure to control, oversize or overweight vehicle and security of load.

In a police report, Stayer told officers he lost control just before the state Route 711 ramp on a bend and the track jackknifed, closing traffic in both southbound lanes. One lane also was closed northbound as part of the truck went into the median.

Reports said the truck was 3,460 pounds over its allotted weight of cargo, which is 80,000 pounds. Reports said Stayer was hauling scrap from a Niles scrap yard when the accident occurred.

No one was injured, but traffic was shut down in the southbound lanes for several hours until the wreckage could be cleared away.

Pleads not guilty

WARREN

Brandon Evans, 24, of Linden Avenue Northeast, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Warren Municipal Court to a misdemeanor domestic-violence charge after police said he assaulted his child’s mother with a piece of 2-by-4 lumber.

The 23-year-old woman said Evans punched her in the face and body during a 9 p.m. argument Monday, then she hid the keys to his car to keep him from driving intoxicated. He started hitting her again outside the house, so she hit him in the face with a coffee mug, cutting him, police said.

Evans followed her into the house and hit her with the lumber. Police observed red marks and swelling on the woman’s arms and head.

Evans was in the hallway at ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital bleeding profusely from his forehead when an officer arrived. Both Evans and the woman were treated at the hospital. The woman was not charged.
