Trumbull coaches banquet is Monday

The Trumbull County Coaches Association will hold its 27th annual Basketball Player of the Year banquet Monday at 7 p.m. at Leo’s Ristorante in Howland. Each Trumbull County school has nominated a senior boy and a senior girl for the honor.

Mike Fuline, basketball head coach at the University of Mount Union, will be the guest speaker. He led the Purple Raiders to their first conference title in 17 years.

Penguin golfers fifth at Jackrabbit Invitational

The Youngstown State men’s golf team placed fifth out of a 15-team field Tuesday at the SDSU Jackrabbit Invitational which concluded at the Primm Valley Golf Course. YSU carded a third-round total of 302, which was the third-lowest team score on Tuesday, to move up from eighth after the second round to fifth with an 899, just one shot out of fourth place. UNLV won the tournament with a three-round 845.

The top individual finisher for YSU was D.J. Holub who placed 17th with a 223. Bill Gaffney was 18th with a 224. Other YSU finishers were Brandon Pluchinsky, 32nd with a 227; Trevor Jones, 46th with a 231; and Bryan Yeo, 48th with a 232. Mark Olbrych competed as an individual and was 39th at 229.

K.O. Drugs final registration Saturday

NORTH LIMA

Late registration and weigh-ins are set Saturday for the 2014 K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament. Boxers can register and weigh-in between 5 and 8 p.m. at the former South Range High School, 11836 South Ave., North Lima. Parental consent and a $25 registration fee are required.

Woods pulls out because of back pain

ORLANDO, Fla.

Tiger Woods withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Tuesday because of persistent pain in his back, creating even more uncertainty for golf’s No. 1 player with the Masters only three weeks away. And that’s if Woods can even play in the Masters. “I personally called Arnold today to tell him that, sadly, I won’t be able to play in his tournament this year,” Woods said on his website.

Colts owner seeks treatment after arrest

INDIANAPOLIS

The family of Colts owner Jim Irsay said Tuesday that he has placed himself in a treatment facility after police found multiple prescription drugs in his vehicle during a traffic stop. The 54-year-old Irsay, who acknowledged a painkiller dependency more than a decade ago, faces preliminary charges of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested near his home in suburban Carmel late Sunday and released the next day.

Jackson introduced as Knicks’ president

NEW YORK

Phil Jackson is back in New York, providing the Knicks stability, championship-building ideas and a link to the franchise’s best days. Now they need him to get some good players. Jackson was introduced Tuesday as team president of the Knicks, in the midst of another difficult season and with no easy path to a quick fix. Jackson was a member of the Knicks’ title teams in 1970 and 1973, and they haven’t won since.

Correction

The Struthers team that won the Pro-Am event associated with the PBA Hubbard Open last weekend at Bell-Wick Bowl consisted of Johnny Medvec, Jarrod Sawyers, Adam Cifra and Andrew Brabant, all freshmen members of the Struthers High bowling team. The foursome rolled a team Baker series of 1254.

An information box in Sunday’s edition of The Vindicator listed the wrong names on the winning team.
