Truck driver cited in 680 snarl
YOUNGSTOWN
Police cited the driver of a tractor trailer that jackknifed on Interstate 680 about 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, blocking traffic in the southbound lanes. Gary Stayer, 60, was cited for failure to control, oversize or overweight veichle and security of load.
In a police report Stayer told officers he lost control just before the state Route 711 ramp on a bend and the track jackknifed, closing traffic in both southbound lanes. One lane was closed northbound as well as part of his truck went into the median.
Reports said the truck was 3,460 pounds over its allotted weight of cargo, which is 80,000 pounds. Reports said Stayer was hauling scrap from a Niles scrap yard when the accident happened.
No one was injured but traffic was shut down in the southbound lanes for several hours until the wreckage could be cleared up.
