Family in Texas deadly wreck settles some cases

DALLAS (AP) — The family of a North Texas teen who killed four people in a drunken wreck has settled with some, but not all, of the victims’ families who sued them.

Court records indicate Ethan Couch’s family has settled three lawsuits, including with families of three people killed in the wreck near Fort Worth. At least four other lawsuits have not been settled.

Couch was drunk when he rammed a pickup truck last year into a crowd of people trying to help the driver of a disabled vehicle. He pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter and was sentenced to probation.

The case drew national attention due to an expert’s testimony that Couch’s wealthy family coddled him into a sense of irresponsibility — a condition the expert termed “affluenza.”
