DeWine meets with Valley police chiefs

BOARDMAN — Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine joined the Mahoning Valley Chiefs of Police Association today for the organization’s monthly meeting.

DeWine talked to more than 30 chiefs and sheriffs from Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties at the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s office in Boardman.

Among the topics were some of the initiatives DeWine has taken to combat the heroin epidemic, rape kit testing, crimes against children, consumer fraud and grassroots programs to stop crime.

DeWine discussed the meeting with reporters after it had ended.

“Our job is to protect Ohio citizens and the way we do it is work with local law enforcement,” DeWine said.

DeWine briefly mentioned public corruption in light of the recent resignation of the former Mahoning County Probate Judge Mark Belinky.

“I really cannot, at this point, talk about the judge’s resignation or the investigation,” DeWine said. “Public corruption is something we all have to take responsibility for.”

DeWine said he should be able to talk more about the issue in a “few days.”
