Crozier tops Horizon League pitchers again

For the second time this season Youngstown Staet senior Casey Crozier was named the Horizon League Softball Pitcher of the Week. Crozier went 2-0 last week and broke the Youngstown State all-time wins record with 47.

She tied the record with a 1-0 shutout over UNC-Wilmington on March 11 then broke the record by defeating Coppin State, 11-2 on Saturday. For the week, Crozier pitched 171/3 innings with a 1.21 earned-run average and struck out 19.

Earlier this season, Crozier broke the Youngstown State strikeout record of 386 and now has 432.

The Penguins host Eastern Michigan in a doubleheader today at 3 p.m. in the inaugural games to be played at the new on-campus YSU Softball Complex.

Quaker Steak & Lube aids Howland softball

The new Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant on Elm Road will host the Howland High softball team for a Chicken4Charity fundraising event Thursday from 4-10 p.m. Through Chicken4Charity, Quaker Steak & Lube will donate 15 percent of the total food sales to the Howland softball team.

In order to participate, supporters of the team must bring an official event flyer with them on the night of the event. Before leaving, guests simply drop a copy of their receipt along with the flyer into the box provided on the lobby information table and their meals will count toward the donation.

Chicken4Charity is a reoccurring fundraising event open to all local groups and organizations. To schedule an event for your group, stop in the Warren/Cortland Quaker Steak & Lube or call at 330-372-9464.

Malone University to end tennis programs

Malone University and the Malone Athletics Department announced Monday that, effective at the end of the current spring season, the Malone men’s and women’s intercollegiate tennis programs will be discontinued.

The discontinuation of these two intercollegiate Pioneer programs will put the current total of intercollegiate programs at the University at 18.

Canfield’s Mettille on winning nationals relay

Mount Union junior Tyler Mettille of Canfield teamed with three other Purple Raiders to capture the 4-by-400 relay at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track Championships at Lincoln, Neb.

Mettille and Chase Swisher, Chad Gentry and Tyler Sparks set a school record of 3:13.48 in winning the national title, the 38th national event title in Mount Union history.

Dodgers, D-backs arrive Down Under

SYDNEY

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers have arrived in Australia for their Major League Baseball season-opening series this weekend after 15-hour flights from the U.S. west coast.

The Diamondbacks arrived first at Sydney airport about 6 a.m. local time Tuesday, followed about four hours later by the Dodgers. The players won’t have much time to get over jet lag — both teams were scheduled to train at the Sydney Cricket Ground later Tuesday.

Clayton Kershaw will start for the Dodgers in Saturday’s season opener, with left-hander Wade Miley replacing Patrick Corbin, who has a left elbow injury, as the Diamondbacks starter. They’ll close out the two-game series Sunday.

Braves face potential loss of two pitchers

KISSIMMEE, Fla.

Braves pitcher Kris Medlen will undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday, while teammate Brandon Beachy is getting another opinion on his ailing elbow. The Braves announced Medlen’s surgery after he was examined Monday by Dr. James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Fla. Beachy was also examined by Andrews and will now head to Los Angeles to get another opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Dodgers’ team physician.
