YSU’s Grace third in nation in shot put

Youngstown State senior Bobby Grace finished third in the shot put Saturday at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track Championships. Grace went out on his best performance ever with his toss of 19.90 meters beating his personal best by 0.28 meters.

During the indoor season Grace set YSU and Horizon League Championship meet records and was named the Horizon League Athlete of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer.

Grace is also just the second Penguin to make it to the NCAA Indoor Championships, joining Kurt Michaelis.

Penguin bowlers in postseason competition

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State men’s bowling team has qualified for postseason competition and is in action this weekend at Smyrna, Tenn., in the 2014 XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships.

The top 80 teams in the nation were divided into four sectional qualifiers.

The Penguins ended the regular season ranked 51st.

The top four teams at each sectional will advance to the championships April 16-18 at Reno, Nev.

Members of the YSU team are Guy Applegate (Jr., Springfield), Alex Cifra (Fr., Struthers), Matt Clemens (Sr., Austintown Fitch), John Cowher Jr. (Sr., Struthers), Brandon Mosley (So., Sharon), James Tancabel (So., Boardman), Steve Sullivan (Sr., Boardman) and Chris Walla (Jr., Poland).

Softball team wins two close games Friday

Senior Sarah Ingalls had a game-tying single in game one and a go-ahead home run in game two, and junior Kayla Haslett picked up two wins as the Youngstown State softball team (10-7) defeated UMass-Lowell, 5-4, in eight innings and Mount St. Mary’s, 4-2, on Friday afternoon.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Ingalls ripped a game-tying single to left field and senior Courtney Ewing’s sacrifice fly plated freshman Sarah Dowd with the game-winning run.

Senior Casey Crozier struck out nine in a no decision, while Haslett struck out two in relief to pick up her fourth win.

In game two, Ingalls slammed a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead. The Penguins added another run that inning on a bases-loaded walk.

Haslett pitched a complete-game with four strikeouts for her fifh victory of the year.

Mooney’s Reese hits for cycle for Wooster

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA.

Senior left fielder Eddie Reese (Cardinal Mooney) hit for the cycle on Wednesday as College of Wooster (4-3) pounded out a 24-11 victory over Salem State.

Reese singled in the first, doubled in the fourth, homered in the sixth, and tripled in the seventh, becoming the first Scot to hit for the cycle since 2001. Reese also had a career-high seven RBI.

YSU baseball coach Gillespie at Curbstone

AUSTINTOWN

Steve Gillispie, baseball coach at Youngstown State University, will be the Curbstone Coaches’ guest speaker at noon on Monday at Lucianno’s Banquet Center.
