Father’s film focuses on congenital defect

BOULDER, COlo.

Derrick Jones, a filmmaker and Youngstown native, will make a documentary about his ordeal with his son, Legacy, who was born in late 2012 with a congenital defect. Jones is currently in the fundraising stage for “Fighting for Legacy.”

He and his partner, Marie Zanders, learned while she was pregnant that their child had congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a rare condition in which the diaphragm fails to form or close. The condition allows abdominal organs into the chest cavity and inhibits lung growth. It requires extreme medical intervention.

The child is 16 months old now and is still on a ventilator to help him breath.

Jones hopes his film raises awareness of CDH and promotes research. To contribute to the film, go to indiegogo.com. The campaign runs through April 22.

In 2012, Jones won the Youngstown Film Festival’s Best of Festival Award for his film “The Great Incarcerator, Part 1: Dark Little Secret.”
