YOUNGSTOWN

A 21-year-old man was shot in the head and arm shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday while sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Petra Food Mart, 2402 South Ave., near Dewey Avenue on the city’s South Side.

The victim, Jaquez Brown of Youngstown, was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he was listed in critical condition, according to the Youngstown Police report.

Police report that more than a dozen shots were fired at the running Chevrolet Suburban, which was at the north end of the parking lot. A suspect was reported fleeing south on South Avenue.

Garden meeting

The Garden District Neighborhood Association will host its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 124 McKinley Ave. Guest speakers will be Sophia Buggs and Youngstown Police Chief Robin Lees.

Buggs is an AmeriCorps VISTA spokeswoman for Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. She will talk about various aspects of cooking, farming and building a small agricultural business and inform the group about the Commonwealth Incubator Kitchen.

Lees will give an overview of department safety measures for the residents of Youngstown along with a question-and-answer session.

Landscape workshop

Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Road, will offer a Shenango Valley Landscape Management Workshop from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 25-26.

Participants will learn how to gain a competitive lead on landscaping techniques and more.

Health insurance

To help people beat the March 31 deadline for enrolling in a qualified health insurance plan, Access Health Mahoning Valley and Humility of Mary Health Partners are offering two sessions to help people enroll.

They will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Niles at the Eastwood Mall community room; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 25 at Youngstown State University in Kilcawley Center’s Ohio Room.

People with lower annual incomes may now qualify for no-cost Medicaid coverage and also can sign up at this event, said Bill Adams, director of AHMV. Reservations are requested but not required. Call 330-373-0703.

Easter Bunny visit

An Evening with the Easter Bunny will be offered at Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 9 and 10 at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The event will include dinner, arts and crafts, and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.

Small-farm conference

The Northeast Ohio Small Farm Conference and Trade Show, “Living The Small Farm Dream,” is Friday and Saturday at the Mahoning County Career & Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road.

The conference offers seminars taught by Ohio State University Extension professionals and industry leaders on a wide variety of agricultural enterprises; and a trade show of industries servicing small farms.

Friday evening’s “Small Farm Boot Camp – Get Started with a Sustainable, New Farm Enterprise,” will feature interactions between presenters and audience members. Saturday’s agenda offers numerous informative sessions from which to choose.
