The youth group at the Canfield Presbyterian Church did not let the inches of snow that fell to the ground interfere with its chili dinner fundraiser Feb. 9. On a cold, snowy, windy day, the youth of the church offered church members and the community the chance to warm up with several different types of chili.
The menu consisted of 15 variations of chili including, Cincinnati-style, mild, venison, sweet potato chicken, spicy tex mex, white chicken, beanless and medium hot. The menu also included hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, salad, dessert and beverage. Take-out was also available.
The chili was made by parents of the youth and church members.
“It was a group effort. Everyone pitched in from the chili to the desserts,” said Julie Angelo, Canfield Presbyterian Church youth ministry leader.
The chili dinner was a fundrasier for the youth group, which is raising funds for a mission trip in July to the Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey to help clean up efforts associated with Hurricane Sandy. The proceeds go to all aspects of the mission trip.
“We sent cleaning kit buckets to New Jersey through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance after Hurricane Sandy hit. Our yearly mission trip was already planned for that year, so we decided to go to New Jersey this year and help out,” Angelo said.
The youth group offerd two fundraisers a year to help with their mission trips. The next fundraiser will be the Trash and Treasure sale from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on May 3 at the church.
“Our church is so supportive. We have great, great people and the kids are amazing. We are very, very blessed,” Angelo said.
