For the last three years, the Boardman Community Foundation has been giving away two $500 scholarships to deserving seniors, with last year being the first St. Patrick’s Day themed Bowling Bash at Camelot Lanes fundraiser to raise money for the scholarships.

Boardman Community Foundation President Debbie Liptak said her organization teamed up with Boardman High School’s Interact Club to help put on the event.

“We started last year with our first Bowling Bash and what we’re trying to do is raise some funds for a Boardman senior who’s a resident in the Boardman community, to be awarded a scholarship,” she said.

“We wanted to do a fundraising project and we asked the Boardman High School Interact Club to help us with selling tickets which they did at the high school and they’re here at the door selling tickets.

“They could be a student that goes to Ursuline, or Mooney, or Boardman, or Youngstown Christian.”

The Interact Club is a high school division of the Boardman Rotary and helps the Rotary at events that include both the pancake breakfast and the lemon fest.

Six lanes were reserved at Camelot Lanes for the event. For the $10 ticket price, attendees got two hours of bowling and free shoes. In addition, their name was entered into a drawing to win an iTunes gift card. Attendees were also asked to wear green in honor of the St. Patrick’s Day theme.

Any high school senior who is a Boardman resident is eligible to apply for the scholarships.

Applications are available through their high school’s guidance counselor. In addition, applicants are required to submit a story as to why they want to be an applicant. The Boardman Community Foudation committee decides which two seniors are awarded the scholarships.

Emma Schwendeman is the president of Interact and helped promote the Bowling Bash and sell tickets. She is a senior at Boardman High School.

“I sold tickets at lunch, and I’ve been putting announcements on at our school to try and get people to come out and bowl for the night,” she said.
