YSU softball falls 7-1 to UNC-Wilmington

The Youngstown State softball team had its three-game winning streak snapped after dropping a 7-1 decision to UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday afternoon.
The Penguins (8-7) had just four hits and committed four errors. The Seahawks scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, one in the both the fourth and fifth, and two more in the sixth. The Penguins scored their only run in the top of the sixth when sophomore Miranda Castiglione singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball.
Youngstown State faces UMass-Lowell and Mount St. Mary’s, Friday at 3:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. at the Coppin State Tournament in Baltimore, Md.
Boardman SADD to host volleyball tourney

On Thursday, the Boardman PTSA and Students Against Destructive Decisions organizations will hold a volleyball tournament from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the BHS gymnasium.
SADD Advisor, Elisabeth Miller, said of the competition, “our intention is to promote positive choices and activities for students.” The slogan is “I’ve got better things to do than drugs.”
There are 18 teams competing to win the championship. The winning team will receive a $5 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card for each student participant and will play an exhibition game against a team of BHS staff members.
Three Spartans place at indoor state meet
Three Boardman athletes placed at the Indoor State Track Championships last weekend.
Spartans junior Jordan Grantonic qualified in 3200-meter for the third year in a row. This year she earned her first All-Ohio honors by placing fifth with a career personal best indoor time of 11:17.60.
Senior Alan Burns qualified for the second year in a row and earned All-Ohio honors in 1600-meter by placing sixth with a time of 4:21.90. Senior Justin Maroni also ran a personal best by seven seconds in 1600-meter to place 9th.
Local Derby girls back in action this weekend

The Little Steel Derby Girls will play their second match of the season on Saturday when the NEO travel to the Fun Factory.

Stars’ Peverley out for season after collapse
DALLAS
Rich Peverley will not play again this season after the Dallas Stars forward collapsed on the bench during a game.
One of Peverley’s doctors said at a news conference Wednesday that the 31-year-old will undergo a procedure that was originally planned for after the season. He was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat in training camp. Dr. Robert Dimeff said Peverley’s playing status beyond this season is unknown.
Peverley was stabilized by doctors at American Airlines Center and taken to a Dallas hospital, where was in stable condition and undergoing tests. The game was postponed.
MLS’ Kuykendall dies of cancer at age 32
WASHINGTON
Former D.C. United midfielder Shawn Kuykendall has died from a rare form of cancer at the age of 32. United and MLS announced that Kuykendall died early Wednesday from thymic cancer.
After Kuykendall’s diagnosis last year, the soccer community rallied around him with the phrase “Kuykenstrong.” U.S. national team and MLS players began wearing “Kuykenstrong” T-shirts at games and other events. United players wore the T-shirts during warm-ups at their season opener last week.
Kuykendall was born in the D.C. suburbs and played at American University before joining United in 2005. He was coaching and helping youth player development in the D.C. area.
