Kent Trumbull Theater to stage ‘Spring Awakening’
Staff report
WARREN
Kent Trumbull Theater will present “Spring Awakening” in its original stage-play form beginning Friday.
“Spring Awakening” was written by Franz Wedekind in the late 19th century and was controversial because of its brutally authentic storytelling. The play would become the inspiration for the Tony-winning rock musical of the same name.
Kent-Trumbull’s production is directed by Daniel-Raymond Nadon, who presents it in the original Expressionistic style. The production includes mask work, distorted scenery and over-the-top portrayals of the many adult characters.
“Spring Awakening” traces the dawning sexual awareness of four teenagers in a town in Germany in the late 1800s. Despite its age, the tragic tale of Melchior, Moritz, Wendla and Hansy remains fresh and unsettling.
“Spring Awakening” contains adult subject matter and is not recommended for children.
It will be performed at Kent Trumbull Theater, on the campus at 4314 Mahoning Ave. NW, Friday-Sunday and March 21-23. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays
