Honors recital set for Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio Federation of Music Clubs will host its annual honors recital at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bliss Recital Hall on the Youngstown State University campus.

There will be performances from local students who have received three-consecutive years of superior ratings in the OFMC judging event. The program will consist of piano solos, piano concertos and violin solos performed by 27 local musicians from second through 12th grades.

The Powerstown Neighbors Block Watch will meet at 7 p.m. today at Faith Community Church, 1919 Midlothian Blvd. Councilman John R. Swierz, D-7th, will attend to discuss neighborhood issues.

Police search finds meth ingredients

NEWTON FALLS

Village police acted on a tip regarding a possible “pop-bottle” methamphetamine lab at a house on Ophelia Street on Tuesday morning, getting a search warrant and finding ingredients and apparatus used in that type of operation.

Police received assistance from the Trumbull Ashtabula Group Law Enforcement Task Force and the Trumbull County HazMat team to stabilize the materials, which were found in the garage.

Police Chief Eugene Fixler said charges against an adult male who lives at the house part of the time are pending further evaluation of the items recovered.

Purim celebration planned at JCC

A Purim carnival is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.

The event will include a fortune teller, face painting, bounce house, arts and crafts and games. A costume contest will take place at noon.

Purim recounts the story of Esther, who had been made queen by the king of Persia, and her cousin, Mordecai. The event celebrates the victory of Esther over the villainous Haman. For information, call the JCC youth department at 330-746-3251.

Park trolley tours

The Mill Creek MetroParks April Cohasset Express trolley tours are open to the public.

The dates include: April 22 trolley tour, Earth Day Breakfast, Birds and Bloom, is $10 for residents and $12 for nonresidents, and the April 24 and 27 trolley tours are $5 for residents and $7 for nonresidents, 12 and under or 60 and older: $3 residents, $5 nonresidents. Limited seating is available. Preregister/pay 36 hours in advance at Ford Nature Center.

Donors, project presenters needed

Warren SOUP is seeking project presenters, donors and volunteers for its May 2 event at 5:30 p.m. at the Mahoning Valley Hope Center, 3217 Surrey Road SE. The cost is $5 per person.
