Liberty’s Cordy commits to Northwestern Ohio
Staff report
LIBERTY
When Kimmy Cordy’s softball career at Liberty High School draws to a close — preferably in June — she will leave the Leopards as a four-year starter.
Then she’ll be off to The University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima. Cordy signed a letter of intent with UNOH on Feb. 19.
“I am very excited with my final choice to play in the NAIA at UNOH,” said Cordy, a switch-hitter who batted .433 as a junior at Liberty last season. “UNOH has everything I am looking for in a university both academically and in its softball program.
“My goal all along was to play softball at the next level. I decided early on in high school to only concentrate on softball and not play other sports and I don’t regret that decision because it’s paying off now.”
Cordy is a catcher and has also played third base with the Leopards and with the Ohio Blast, an 18-and-under summer travel team. Her collective fielding percentage over the last three seasons at Liberty was .989.
“We are very excited to have Kimmy join our program,” UNOH coach Tracy Coffman said. “She is a very skilled catcher who will handle our pitching staff well. She is a great fit for us academically and shows excellent leadership skills.”
Ohio Blast coach Ron Miokovic said Cordy was scouted regularly as the team played its summer schedule.
“I am very happy for her and glad we were able to help her achieve her dreams of playing at the next level,” he said. “Kimmy has great leadership skills and ‘swag’ on the field. She is a confident but not overly cocky. “Offensively, she is a strong switch hitter and defensively she is very solid behind the plate with a very powerful arm.”
Cordy was a team captain for Liberty and was voted the Leopards’ top defensive player in 2013. She was a second-team selection on the All-Anerican Conference National Division All-Star team. She also earned honorable-mention status on the Division III All-Trumbull County team.
Cordy said she turned down offers from NCAA Division II and III programs.
“In my recruiting process I learned that the NAIA actually has almost as many athletic scholarships as D-I schools for softball,” she said. “The package UNOH has for me fits all my needs.”
Kimmy’s parents are Dave and Chrissy Cordy.
