Poland pre-selling regional hoops tickets

The Poland Athletic Department will be pre-selling tickets to the boys basketball regional semifinal game on Thursday at the Canton Civic Center.

They can be purchased Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the athletic office.

All pre-sale tickets, general admission, and reserved are $6 each. Tickets at the gate will be $8.

Girard to have 10 new HOF inductees

The Girard Hall of Fame will induct 10 during ceremonies on April 12 at Leo’s Ristorante in Howland.

The honorees are: Dustin Helle (class of 2003), Tealle Hunkus (2003), Randy Mason Jr. (2002), Michael Cardiero (1979), Michael DelBene (1972), Webster Dawson (1955), Ken Vaughan (1953), Claire Purdum (1929), Jane Harris (Community Service Award) and Edward Crish (Community Service Award).

The banquet begins at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $40 and available at Girard High School, Melfi’s Pizza Parlor or from Mark Zuppo at 330-501-5385.

Lowellville’s Lucente places at state meet

AKRON

Lowellville senior Nicholas Lucente finished seventh in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:00.43 at Saturday’s state indoor track meet.

With a top-eight finish, Lucente earned a medal in the Division II/III competition.

Errors cost Penguins on the diamond

The Youngstown State baseball team committed four costly errors and stranded 13 runners in an 11-5 loss to Eastern Michigan at the University of Cincinnati’s Marge Schott Stadium on Sunday evening.

Josh White was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and seven other Penguins had hits against the Eagles.Eastern Michigan scored five runs, one of which was unearned, on three hits and three walks in the first inning, and the Penguins were never able to catch up.

The Penguins shaved two runs off the deficit in the third when White singled in Kurt Laver and Lorenzo Arcuri, but Eastern Michigan added three runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 8-2.

Youngstown State will start a two-game series at Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

YSU women stumble in tennis out West

Stockton, Calif.

Annina Brendel and Dominika Lackova both won individual matches for the Youngstown State women’s tennis team at Pacific on Sunday afternoon.

Brendel earned a straight-set win at No. 2 defeating Pacific’s Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz, 7-5, 6-2. Lackova picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Christiana Ferrari.

The Penguins (5-6) dropped the dual to the Tigers (5-5) , 5-2. YSU returns to action today at San Francisco.

Matisi, Westminster drop tennis match

The Westminster College men’s tennis team lost, 9-0, to Juniata in the first day of its Spring Trip on Sunday. The Titans dropped to 2-1 overall, while the Eagles improved to 1-0.

The Titan duo of freshman Troy Abbott (Seneca Valley HS) and junior Mike Matisi (Lowellville HS) lost, 8-1, in first doubles. Matisi lost in second singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Westminster will continue its Spring Trip today, with a match against Penn. State-Harrisburg.

Ex-Steeler Mendenhall retiring from NFL

Running back Rashard Mendenhall is retiring from the NFL at the age of 26.

Agent Mike McCartney confirmed via Twitter on Sunday that Mendenhall had decided to end his playing career after six NFL seasons, all but one of them with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mendenhall, the Steelers’ first-round draft pick and 23rd overall selection out of Illinois in 2008, gained 4,326 career yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
