Canfield teacher honored at 25 Under 35 event

Canfield High School English teacher, Chris Jennings, was recently honored at the 24 Under 35 event at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“I don’t like to toot my own horn. I don’t even really like having others toot it for me, but the award is meaningful to me because it’s a validation of the work I do, and that’s enough,” said Jennings.

Nominated by Beth Ann Tabak, a member of the Mahoning Valley Young Professionals, Jennings is in his seventh year of teaching and his second year at Canfield High School where he teaches 10th and 11th grade English, as well as Journalism. Along with the courses he teaches, Jennings donates his time advising the school’s newspaper, TV news show and student council. He also finds time to coach baseball and tutor at the Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS outreach program.

Humbled by the honor, Jennings said, “The most important thing I learned from being a part of this process is that there are so many amazing young people in our community doing big things to make the Youngstown area a better place.”

The 25 Under 35 program is hosted by the Mahoning Valley Young Professionals and is partnered with the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. The group recognizes young professionals in the valley for their excellence in the field they work, as well as their commitment to their community.

“I think Canfield is the kind of school district that produces people of that [professional] caliber, and I hope that our students realize the opportunity they have to do great things anywhere in the world, but that there’s so much they can do right here at home. Youngstown is a great place, and it needs great people to make it stronger,” said Jennings.
