15-year-old Pa. girl gets juvenile confinement in crash

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A 15-year-old northwestern Pennsylvania girl who was driving more than 100 mph when she crashed an SUV that killed her 8-year-old brother and injured three other children must spend at least 30 to 60 days confined to a juvenile facility.

The Associated Press isn’t identifying the girl because she was tried in Erie County Juvenile Court, where the Erie Times-News reports she was sentenced Thursday.

Judge John Trucilla says the girl may be moved to a less-restrictive juvenile program if she shows signs she can be rehabilitated.

The girl’s mother, Alma Zilkic, asked for leniency saying, “Nothing is going to bring my son back. I don’t want to lose my daughter, too.”

Erie police say the girl took one of her parents’ vehicles without permission and crashed Aug. 13 after weeks of misbehavior and rebellion.
