2 MCCTC students face charges after drug deal at school

CANFIELD

A court date is pending for two 17-year-old males arrested earlier this week after a purported drug deal on school property.

According to a police report, a 17-year-old male sold one pill of his prescribed Vyvanse, medication used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, for $5 to another student during science class Monday at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on North Palmyra Road.

The teen from Canfield is charged with drug trafficking, a third-degree felony. The buyer, of North Benton, is charged with drug abuse, a fifth-degree felony.

School officials were notified of the transaction about 10:20 a.m. Monday by another 17-year-old student from Sebring. He and the suspected pill buyer were kicked out of a science class after an argument about selling drugs in school, the report said.

Assistant Principal Ralph Sandy talked to the student about the argument, and he told Sandy he saw a pill sold for $5.

The male who bought the pill admitted to Sandy he bought one Vyvanse during class and swallowed it.

He also told police he approached the seller last Friday and wanted something to help him focus better in class.

The student who alerted the administration told police he knew what the pill was because it was 70 milligrams, was a red-orange and blue capsule, and he knew the seller had a prescription.

Police then searched the suspected seller and found a $5 bill in his pocket. The teenager told police he has a prescription for Vyvanse.

Police said the two teenagers were released to their parents’ custody. Mahoning County Juvenile Court officials will notify the parents when a court date is set, police added.
