Wilson enjoys time with Texas Rangers

SURPRISE, Ariz.

Russell Wilson has enjoyed spending time with the Texas Rangers. Yet the Seattle Seahawks are never far from the young quarterback’s mind. While Wilson sat in the Texas Rangers dugout Monday, fans yelling “Seahawks” filled the spring training stadium.

Wilson threw for 3,357 yards and 26 touchdowns and helped the Seattle Seahawks rout the Denver Broncos 43-8 in the Super Bowl last month. He also happens to be a pretty good baseball player, drafted three times.

The Rangers picked Wilson for $12,000 in the Rule 5 minor league draft in December. He was in the Rangers’ camp Monday, took ground balls in morning drills and brought the Rangers’ lineup to the umpires before the game, but did not play in the 6-5 loss to Cleveland.

Djokovic beats Murray in Garden exhibition

NEW YORK

Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray 6-3, 7-6 (2) in an exhibition at Madison Square Garden on Monday night. The friends and rivals mixed the usual exhibition hijinks with some long rallies reminiscent of their epic Grand Slam matchups.

Murray said Monday morning that last week in Acapulco was the first time since his September surgery that his back wasn’t bothering him after matches. He missed four months after the minor procedure to alleviate nagging pain.

Djokovic was in his element. The born showman always has fun with the New York crowd at the U.S. Open. When on game point he shanked an overhead into the net, he did pushups in penance.

US says friendly with Ukraine is still on

CHICAGO

It looks as if the U.S. men’s national soccer team will get to play Ukraine after all. Wednesday’s friendly in Larnaca, Cyprus, appeared to be in jeopardy because of the upheaval in Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula. But the U.S. Soccer Federation said Monday night in an emailed statement that the game would proceed as scheduled.

The friendly is part of the United States’ preparation for this summer’s World Cup.

Warren leads NC State by Pittsburgh, 74-67

PITTSBURGH

T.J. Warren scored a career-high 41 points and N.C. State surged past Pittsburgh 74-67 on Monday night. N.C. State (18-12, 8-9 ACC) won for just the second time in its last six games, riding Warren for much of the second half. Josh Newkirk led Pitt (22-8, 10-7) with a career-high 20 points but the Panthers had no answer for Warren. The Panthers threw a series of players at Warren, from Lamar Patterson to defensive specialist Cam Wright to power forward Jamel Artis. They even mixed up the defense, running zone at some point while mixing in a little man-to-man and the occasional double team.
