Democrats in the 6th and 14th Congressional Districts are labeled as emerging races candidates
YOUNGSTOWN
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee named Democrats challenging incumbent Republicans in the 6th and 14th Congressional Districts as “emerging races” candidates.
Former state Rep. Jennifer Garrison of Marietta, running in the 6th, and attorney Michael Wager of Moreland Hills, running in the 14th, received the recognition Monday, along with 10 others nationwide, from the DCCC, which recruits and raises money for Democrats running for U.S. House seats.
It is a step below the DCCC’s Red to Blue candidates. The DCCC named 16 candidates Monday as Red to Blue, which will provide them with financial, communications, grass-roots and strategic support.
Emerging races candidates “are making themselves competitive by running smart campaigns which are becoming increasingly competitive,” according to the DCCC. They need to rise to Red to Blue candidates to receive similar assistance from the DCCC.
Garrison is facing political newcomer Greg Howard of Albany in the May 6 Democratic primary. The winner faces two-term U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson of Marietta, R-6th, who was named last year by the National Republican Congressional Committee to its Patriot Program, which provides money and strategic assistance to incumbents in competitive races.
The 6th includes all of Columbiana County and eight southern and central-western townships in Mahoning County.
Wager will face the winner of the Republican primary in the 14th between freshman U.S. Rep. David Joyce of Russell, who also was named last year to the NRCC’s Patriot Program, and state Rep. Matt Lynch of Bainbridge, as well as Libertarian David Macko of Solon in the November general election.
The 14th includes northern Trumbull County.
