Area athletes perform well for Kent State

Kent State’s men’s track and field team was second in the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday with 132 points. Akron won with 140 points.

Michael King (Jr., Salem) finished second in the shot put with a toss of 18.71m, which broke the Kent State record set in 2002.

Miles Dunlap (Jr., McDonald) was second in the 400 with a time of 47.31, the second fastest time on the Kent State records. Dunlap combined with Andrew O’Leary (Fr., South Range), Matthew Tobin and Laron Brown to finish second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:11.47, the third fastest relay in Kent history. Marteze Roper (Sr., Warren Harding) was fourth in the 800 in 1:51.21.

The Kent State women won the MAC title for the third straight season. Joh’Vonnie Mosley (Sr., McDonald) was third in the shot put with a distance of 15.71m.

Umpire Mang to speak at Curbstone luncheon

Longtime baseball umpire John Mang will be the guest speaker at the Curbstone Coaches luncheon Monday at noon at Luciannos Banquet Center.

600 Scotch Doubles event at Wedgewood

The Youngstown-Salem 600 Bring a Friend Scotch Doubles Tournament is March 9 at 1 p.m. at Wedgewood Lanes. At least one woman on the team must be a member of the 600 Club.

Ides of March 5K benefits Niles boosters

The Niles Cross Country and Track Boosters present the return of the Ides of March 5K and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk on March 16 at Niles McKinley High. The 1-mile starts at 8:45 a.m. and the 5K starts at 9 a.m.

Area youth swimmers 4th in Y championships

The Youngstown Y-Neptunes swim team finished fourth of 24 teams at Saturday’s Northeast Ohio YMCA League Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Noah Basista won the boys 11-12 50-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard individual medley. Jordan Stackpole won the boys 11-12 50-yard butterfly and the two helped the 200-yard medley relay finish second. Caleb Satterfield took second in the boys 8-and-under 25-yard butterfly with a time of 17.66 seconds.

Girard sells district semifinals at school

Tickets for the Girard vs. LaBrae boys basketball Division III district semifinal will be sold at Girard High on Monday during school hours. The game is at 7 p.m. Monday at Howland High.
