YOUNGSTOWN

This weekend will be the last weekend to ice skate on the Lily Pond in Mill Creek MetroParks. Supervised ice skating will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday. No skate rentals are provided.

Parking bans

Boardman, Brookfield, Weathersfield and Liberty townships and Hubbard city are ordering parking bans in anticipation of the coming snow- storm. Boardman’s, Brookfield’s and Liberty’s start at 6 p.m. today until further notice. Weathersfield’s also starts at 6 p.m., but runs through 8 a.m. Tuesday. For questions regarding this ban, call the township office at 330-652-6326. Hubbard’s starts at 6 a.m. Sunday until further notice.

I-80 crash injures 2

HUBBARD

A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80, just east of U.S. Route 62, closed the westbound lanes for two hours and backed up traffic into Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon. Two semi trailers were damaged, and both drivers were slightly injured when one driven eastbound by Russell P. Lautanen, 43, of Jefferson, crossed over the median and into the westbound lanes of Route 80 at 3:41 p.m. A westbound semi driven by Ilija Cepic, 59, of London, Ontario, Canada, swerved to avoid Lautanen’s vehicle, and both trucks hit a guardrail, though they did not strike each other. Cepic was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown for treatment. Lautanen refused treatment. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Shooting at cops

Daniel A. Persing, 52, of Garland Drive, was charged with two counts of felonious assault and single counts of discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises and using weapons while intoxicated Tuesday after he purportedly fired a weapon at police.

Persing fired a shot shortly after officers arrived for a 911 call, then fired more times from inside the house as officers took cover, police said. Officers were able to get into the house later and arrest him. Persing was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, for treatment. Judge Thomas Townley of Niles Municipal Court on Thursday ordered him held in the Trumbull County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond. If convicted, Persing could get 20 years in prison.

Robbed in Masury

MASURY

Kwentel W. Teague, 19, of Edgewood Road, Sharon, Pa., was charged with aggravated robbery and booked into the Trumbull County jail Friday, accused of participating in a 9:36 p.m. Feb. 4 armed robbery at a home on Wahabe Court. If convicted, he could get 11 years in prison. Brookfield police said four males, three black and one white, entered the house, all carrying handguns and wearing dark clothing and bandanas over their faces. They held a woman and her grandson at gunpoint, then took cash, prescription pills, cigarettes and a wallet containing a debit card, police said.

Marathon road closures

From 6:30 a.m. until noon Sunday, these roads will be closed for the Youngstown Road Runners Club Mill Creek Distance Classic Half Marathon: West Glacier, West, Bears Den, New Cross, Cross, West Cohasset, High, Chestnut Hill, East Park, Valley, East Glacier, Memorial Hill and Robinson Hill drives.

Drive-thru theft

YOUNGSTOWN

Someone took about $5,200 in cash from an East Side drive-through sometime Thursday morning. Officers were called to the Far Less Drive Thru, 1851 Oak St., at about 10 a.m. after an employee came to work and found a side door open. The employee told police the door had been locked when the last person left about 1 a.m. Thursday. The cash was taken from an office inside. Also taken were 69 packs of cigarettes. Reports say someone pried the door open with a tool to get inside.

Man dies from fire

NEW CASTLE, PA. (AP)

Authorities here say a man died from a house fire Thursday night. Fire officials in Lawrence County say the blaze was reported about 11 p.m. Tom Bulisco, assistant fire chief, said the blaze broke out on the second floor of the two-story home. Crews found heavy flames in the front room and a lot of smoke, he said. Firefighters got Lewis E. Sheffield, 61, out of an upstairs bedroom and rushed him to Jameson Hospital, where was pronounced dead shortly after 11:30 p.m. An autopsy is planned. The cause has been ruled accidental.
