Quakertown Trolley tours scheduled

Staff report

SALEM

The Salem Historical Society, during the summer and fall months, will offer tours on the Quakertown Trolley. Below is a description and cost for the various tours.

Underground Railroad

The docent, dressed as a Salem Quaker, will take passengers back in time to 1856. After the sharing of many stories, the travelers will return to the 21st century with a better understanding of the plight of slaves, the working of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement that flourished in Salem before the Civil War.

Because the homes are private and admittance is not possible, more than 100 slides will be shown on a screen inside the trolley, showing the interiors of the homes, the Underground Railroad hiding places, and several abolitionists who lived in or visited them.

The slides will also help clarify the historical information presented during the program. The tour will last approximately 75 minutes. The cost is $10 per person and a minimum of 15 are necessary to conduct the tour. Scheduled dates are July 13, 1:30 p.m.; July 27, 1:30; Aug, 9, 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; Aug. 17, 1:30 p.m.; Aug. 23, 1:30; Sept. 6, 1:30; Sept. 13, 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; Sept. 27, 1:30; Oct. 11, 1:30; and Oct. 25 and 26, 1:30.
