South Range’s Taylor signs with YSU

Youngstown

Stevie Taylor signed a national letter-of-intent with the Youngstown State University Penguins.

Taylor was a four year varsity player for the Radiers helping them win four straight Inter-Tri County League upper tier titles and two district titles.

In Taylor’s four years, South Range went 96-16. She ended her high school career in the top 10 in the state for single season and career home runs, and single season RBIs.

Three students earn OHSAA scholarships

Brooke Barreca, Jenna Parry and Jennilyn Krumpe will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Barreca (Newton Falls) and Parry (Champion) were selected by the OHSAA to get the OSHAA Scholarship. The winners are picked based on athletic and academic performance. Krumpe (Badger) was selected for the OHSAA Ethnic Minority Scholarship.

The OSHAA will pass out 49 scholarships across six districts in the state.

Tayala places fifth at USATF championship

Sacramento, calif.

Kent State junior and McDonald high school graduate Matthias Tayala earned a fifth place finsh in the hammer throw at the USA Track and Field Outdoor National Championship on June 27.

His mark of 230’ 4” was the best among collegiate athletes. Earlier this month, Tayala won the NCAA Division I National Championship with a school record throw of 241’ 4” in Eugene, Ore.

Huertas gets first win at Houston

HOUSTON

Carlos Huertas raced to his first IndyCar Series victory, leading a Colombian sweep of the rain-soaked podium Saturday in the Grand Prix of Houston doubleheader opener.

Strategy put Justin Wilson and Huertas in the lead late in the race. Wilson eventually had to pit for fuel. Huertas assumed the lead with just over seven minutes to go.

Then a caution briefly slowed action but IndyCar had enough time to run one final lap.

Joe Gibbs: Redskins name ’prideful’

SPARTA, Ky.

Count former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs among those who has no problem with the team’s name.

The NFL team that Gibbs led to three Super Bowl titles in the first of two stints as coach has been heavily criticized for its nickname that’s viewed as derogatory toward Native Americans.

Asked about the controversy before the NASCAR race Saturday at Kentucky Speedway, the Hall of Fame coach and racing team owner called the Redskins name “prideful” and said, “everything about that name has been positive for me.” Gibbs said he heard nothing negative during his time there.

American forward Altidore trains on own

Jozy Altidore has trained on his own again, an indication the injured forward isn’t likely to start in the United States’ second-round World Cup game against Belgium next week.

Altidore hasn’t played since straining his left hamstring in the opener against Ghana on June 16.

Report: Crew soccer fan struck by lightning

COLUMBUS

The Columbus Crew’s Major League Soccer game against FC Dallas was postponed Saturday night, with The Columbus Dispatch reporting on its website that a male fan was struck by lightning in the stadium parking lot.

Columbus Fire Department Lt. Thad Turano told The Associated Press that emergency officials transported a victim in cardiac arrest to Ohio State Medical Center. He says that a caller reported at 8 p.m. that a person had been struck by lightning.

Turano says the victim’s condition wasn’t available.
