Police say a woman who was found passed out with a needle in her hand in the parking lot of a South Side gas station injected herself with the needle after she regained consciousness.

Police were called to a 2673 Glenwood Ave. gas station about 11:10 a.m. Thursday for a report of a woman in a car passed out at the gas pumps with a needle in her hand. When they arrived they found 47-year-old Deanna Thomas of Girard passed out in the driver’s seat.

Reports said she woke up when an officer checked on her and then jabbed the needle in her leg and pushed the plunger down to inject what was inside the needle, reports said.

The officer managed to grab her hand and got the needle out of her leg before she could inject all of what was inside. There was still some residue of suspected heroin inside the needle, reports said.

Thomas was arrested on charges of possession of drug-abuse instruments and possession of heroin. She was taken to a hospital for treatment then transferred to the Mahoning County jail.
