On May 2, the Rotary Club of Canfield hosted its annual “Civic Day” luncheon at St. Michael’s Church in Canfield.

The club hosted members of the Canfield High Schools civics class along with public leaders from both the city and the township. Among those in attendance the Mayor of the city of Canfield, the Township Trustees, Marie Cartwright and Brian Governor, as well as the chief of Police and the chief of the Cardinal Joint Fire District among others.

The Canfield Rotary presented former Mayor Bill Kay with the “Non Rotarian of the Year” Award for his work within Canfield as both an educator in the school system and as Mayor of the City.

The club also presented a new award for “Service above Self” to Joseph Nacarato, a sixth-grader at Canfield Village Middle School for his work in raising funds to help with the medical expenses for Mike Collins, who is battling cancer. Narcato designed a T-shirt with the phrase “Crusaders for a Cure” to help raise money for Collins, who is his CCD teacher at St. Christine’s Church. He sold 437 shirts for the cause.

Narcato said he began the project because he needed to give back since everyone was so giving to him during his recent struggle with his own illness.

In November Joseph was hospitalized for 24 days in Rainbows Children’s Hospital in Cleveland after being diagnosed with Crones Disease. He said that he and his family were given so much support from their family, friends, church and the community that he knew that the right thing to do was to give back whenever he can.

Narcato also said that the rotary moto “Service above Self” should be a way of life for everyone, not just Rotarians like he and his father.
