Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops’ salary will jump to $5.25 million for the upcoming season.

The new figure was approved by the school’s Board of Regents. The total is up from about $5 million last season.

Stoops is a Youngstown native and Cardinal Mooney High School graduate.

Stoops’ base salary will remain $325,000. He receives $700,000 for staying at Oklahoma. His income from private funds will increase from $3,725,000 to $4,025,000.

Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops, Bob’s brother, got a raise, too. His salary increased to $850,000 for next season, up $200,000.

Oklahoma went 11-2 last season to take Stoops’ career record to 160-39. The Sooners defeated Alabama 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl after last season to position itself as one of the favorites to contend for the National Championship in 2014. Stoops would receive a $275,000 bonus for winning the title.

Giants fan beating lawsuit goes to jury

LOS ANGELES

The lawsuit against the Los Angeles Dodgers and former owner Frank McCourt over the devastating beating of a San Francisco Giants fan is in the hands of the jury.

In the trial’s closing arguments Thursday, the attorney for brain-damaged victim Bryan Stow asked for $37.2 million in actual damages and suggested doubling it to account for pain and suffering.

The defense argued that jurors should not find any liability and should not award any damages.

Attorney Dana Fox asserted that the blame lay with the two Dodgers fans who attacked Stow and with Stow himself. Fox cited Stow’s high blood-alcohol level and a witness account of Stow yelling in the Dodger Stadium parking lot before the assault.

Stow was attacked after the 2011 opening day game. Hope Solo apologizes following arrest

U.S. women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo has apologized to her fans via social media following her arrest for domestic violence last weekend.

Solo posted her apology on her Facebook page and also posted a link to the statement on her official Twitter account.

In addition to her apology, Solo said she loves her family, and like all families, hers has challenges. She says it is her hope to resolve the situation as a family.

Solo pleaded not guilty plea to two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence Monday in a Kirkland, Washington, court and was released without bail.

She is accused of assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew at her sister’s home in suburban Seattle early Saturday. Her lawyer claims the goalkeeper was a victim in the altercation.
