Man leads cops on chase from downtown

YOUNGSTOWN

A Foster Avenue man was arraigned on charges in municipal court Monday that he led police on a low-speed chase after he failed to stop for a traffic light downtown.

Kevin Derilus, 24, was arraigned before Magistrate Anthony Sertick on charges of failure to comply and assault on a police officer. His bond was set at $20,000.

Reports said officers in an unmarked car tried to pull over a car Derilus was driving about 11:50 p.m. Saturday for failing to stop at a red light on Symphony Place. Instead he continued driving.

The officers had their lights and sirens on, and two more marked cruisers later joined the chase but the car still refused to stop, reports said.

At one point it appeared the car was slowing down at West Rayen and Belmont avenues but it then sped up, reports said. Reports said the car also swerved as if to hit one of the cruisers chasing it in an opposite lane.

The car continued going until it pulled into Derilus’ drive, reports said. Derilus got out of the car and was ordered to lie on the ground, and he complied, reports said.

A woman who was in the passenger’s seat was crying and told officers she had pleaded with Derilus to pull over but he would not.

Derilus was taken to the Mahoning County jail, where he was arraigned via video hookup.
