“American Experience: FREEDOM SUMMER” (9 P.M., PBS): This powerful documentary recalls the brave and selfless actions of young activists, black and white, who flocked to Mississippi in 1964 in an attempt to shatter the foundations of white supremacy.

“Tyrant” (10 p.m., FX): The new drama series “Tyrant” follows the self- exiled son (Adam Rayner) of a Middle Eastern dictator who leaves his comfy home in California to visit his homeland for a family member’s wedding. Much turmoil ensues.

Submarine tours go behind scenes

PITTSBURGH

On select Sunday mornings this summer, Carnegie Science Center will offer visitors the chance to go behind the scenes of the USS Requin, a Cold War-era submarine docked along the Ohio River, and to tour areas rarely seen by the general public.

Requin behind-the-scenes Tech Tours will take place from 9-11:30 a.m. on June 29; July 13 and 27; Aug. 10 and 31; and Sept. 14. During tours led by a submarine veteran and Science Center staff, visitors will learn how Requin crew faced challenges and life underwater. It’s a special chance to explore unrestored compartments, climb into the conning tower and see the periscope.

Because of the submarine’s structure, Requin Tech Tours require full mobility, and tour size is limited to 12 people. Participants must be age 15 and older. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Advance registration is required. Call 412-237-1637.

Actors are sought for new-play fest

YOUNGSTOWN

Auditions will be today and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for the Voices of the Valley New One-Act Play Festival at the Youngstown Playhouse.

All roles are open, and a wide range of ages of both men and women are needed. Those auditioning will be asked to read from a script. An experienced percussionist is also needed for one of the plays.

The first concert in the Music by the Lake series at The Inn at Glenellen, 9661 Market St., will be Jim Frank Combo at 7 p.m. Thursday. Other concerts include Del Sinchak Orchestra, July 24; and the Rex Taneri combo, Aug. 21.
