Jury selection begins in Lavelle Stanley murder case

YOUNGSTOWN — Jury selection is underway in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a man charged with aggravated murder and other crimes.

Judge R. Scott Krichbaum is hearing the case against 24-year-old Lavelle Stanley of East Judson Avenue, who is charged with aggravated murder, felonious assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Stanley is accused of killing Elliot Stewart, 25, and wounding his 26-year-old brother at about 5:20 p.m. Nov. 15 outside a Southern Boulevard business.

Police said Elliot Stewart was shot after he tried to break up an argument between two women and that Stanley was upset Stewart intervened.
