Safety Day at lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host its eighth annual Safety Day at Berlin Lake-Mill Creek Campground Day Use Area, 7400 Bedell Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

There will be 10 or more safety-related stations, including games or information about local safety agencies. Games will include a life-ring toss, boating safety obstacle course and hypothermia demonstration.

Agencies at the event will include the Berlin Center Fire Department, Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department, Portage County Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

A life-flight helicopter is scheduled to land during the event.

Farmers Market

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The New Castle Farmer’s Market, at the corner of East and East Washington streets, will open at 10 a.m. July 12.

The market is opening at a special time in cooperation with the Jameson Hospital Run for Your Heart Race, which begins at the hospital’s South Campus, 1000 S. Mercer St., at 8 a.m. The race leads participants through the heart of historic downtown New Castle; several downtown streets will be closed during the race.

The market will resume its regular opening hour of 8:30 a.m. on July 19.

YOUNGSTOWN

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s mobile-outreach center will visit the Youngstown unit of the NAACP from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday to accept complaints of employment discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 and older), disability or retaliation.

The EEOC considers retaliation the firing of a worker who complained about job discrimination, gave evidence in a job-discrimination matter or filed a charge of job discrimination with the commission.

The unit prefers appointments, but walk-ins are welcome.
