Fifth arrest made in Poland break-ins
POLAND
Law-enforcement officials arrested a fifth person early Friday who purportedly was involved in a series of break-ins that occurred Tuesday.
Charges against Mark Mansfield, 30, of Niles have yet to be announced by Poland Township police.
Mansfield is the fifth suspect to be arrested after a spree of break-ins into unlocked cars in residential developments. Keith Sarrach, 23; Roxann Putnam, 32; Rex Putnam; and Tera Watters, 24, all of Niles, were arrested earlier this week.
Sarrach, Watters and the Putnams are charged with misdemeanor obstructing official business and felony receiving stolen property.
Adoption session
WARREN
Northeast Ohio Adoption Services will have an information session for couples or single individuals who are considering adoption or giving foster care to a school-age child. It will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. July 8 at NOAS offices at 5000 E. Market Street, Suite 26.
Arrested on warrant
YOUNGSTOWN
Police arrested a man on a warrant after they found him passed out in a car with heavy front-end damage about 4:05 a.m. Friday in a Mahoning Avenue parking lot.
An officer on patrol spotted a car in the West Side parking lot and found William Nolan, 38, of Youngstown, passed out in the driver’s seat.
Reports said the officer moved over to the passenger door, and Nolan woke up. Nolan smelled heavily of alcohol, reports said.
A records check showed Nolan had a warrant through municipal court on a charge of driving under suspension. He was taken to the Mahoning County jail on the warrant, reports said.
Safe Sitter course
YOUNGSTOWN
Registration for the first session of the 2014 Safe Sitter program, sponsored by Humility of Mary Health Partners closes Tuesday.
Classes are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren. The Safe Sitter course will be repeated July 9 and 10 at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, July 23 and 24 at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren and Aug. 6 and 7 at St. Elizabeth.
The two-day course teaches boys and girls 11 to 13 basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, child-care tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help. The cost is $28.50. Scholarships are available for those who meet financial-eligibility requirements.

Grant for homeless
YOUNGSTOWN
The Youngstown/Mahoning County Continuum of Care Program received a $30,055 grant in a second round of funding announced Thursday by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development totaling $3,728,834 for 25 local homeless assistance programs in Ohio.
HUD distributed $140 million to some 900 local homeless assistance programs across the country.
The grants ensure that additional permanent and transitional housing-renewal projects are able to continue operating in the coming year.
