LeBron and Savannah James expecting kid

MIAMI

Pat Riley says LeBron James’ home team is growing.

The Miami Heat president revealed Thursday that the four-time NBA MVP and his wife Savannah are expecting for a third time, their latest addition to be a girl.

No word yet on when the baby is arriving. James and his wife already have two sons.

Riley dropped the nugget during his season-ending meeting with reporters on Thursday, saying, “Savannah now is going to have a little baby girl to join her in the fight against the two boys and LeBron, which she needs.”

James and his wife were married last summer, and have been together for more than a decade.

NCAA president takes stand in O’Bannon trial

OAKLAND, Calif.

NCAA President Mark Emmert has taken the witness stand and is defending his organization’s role in college sports. He calls such a role vital for both students and the colleges themselves.

Emmert says sports unites campuses and helps schools recruit faculty and students. He says the athletes learn life lessons from competing at all levels and he couldn’t imagine universities without sports.

His testimony Thursday came in a much-anticipated appearance as the NCAA tries to convince a federal judge that its system of so-called amateurism is not anti-competitive and is the best model for regulating college sports. Plaintiffs led by former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon are seeking an injunction that would allow players to band together and sell the rights to their names and likenesses in broadcasts.

MLB honoring Gehrig

NEW YORK

Major League Baseball is preparing to honor Lou Gehrig on the 75th anniversary of his famed “luckiest man” speech.

MLB will donate $300,000 to organizations that fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The Hall of Famer was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis when he spoke at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939. The first baseman died two years later from ALS at age 37.
