GREENVILLE, PA.

Just over a year after serving as senior class commencement speaker as she graduated from Thiel College, Howland’s Kelly Barzak has been named head coach of the Tomcats’ women’s volleyball team.

Barzak was a four-year letter winner and starter for Thiel’s volleyball and basketball teams earning all-President’s Athletic Conference honors in both sports all four years. She left as Thiel’s all-time women’s volleyball leader in kills (1,292) and blocks (449) and as the school’s third all-time leading scorer (1,401).

Barzak graduated Summa Cum Laude from Thiel and was named to the Dean’s List eight times, earning the Dean’s Key.

She served as graduate assistant for the volleyball team at Muskingum University the past 10 months while pursuing a master’s degree in education.

Senior TE Adams leads Penguins in classroom

Youngstown State senior tight end Nate Adams was awarded the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Presidents Academic Award, the league announced on Tuesday. The award requires a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average (through fall 2013 semester) and participation in athletics a minimum of two years. The student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation.

Adams was one of 10 Penguin football players who received the Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award which requires a minimum GPA of 3.2 for the previous two semesters. Others are Antoine Cox, Mason Giacomelli, Kurt Hess, Nick Liste, Johnny Medina, D.J. Moss, Torrian Pace, Dominic Rich and Carson Sharbaugh.

In addition, 43 YSU football players were named to the conference’s 2013-14 Academic Honor Roll.

Former YSU forward Belin signs in Europe

Former Youngstown State basketball forward Kamren Belin has agreed to contract terms with Universitatea Craiova, a professional team based in Craiova, Romania.

Belin, a 6-foot-7, 225-pounder averaged 11.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for the Penguins last season, his second in Youngstown.

The Atlanta native averaged 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds as a junior. He played two years at Cowley Junior College.

YSU women’s golf program seeks golfers

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State women’s golf program is hosting an open call/tryout for walk-on players for the 2014-15 season, head coach Nate Miklos announced on Tuesday.

Interested golfers planning to attend YSU in the fall should email their playing resume to Coach Miklos at nmiklos@ysu.edu no later than July 15 to be considered for a spot.

Resumes should include high school match/tournament results from this year, spring/summer tournament results from this year as well as academic information (GPA and test scores). A date and location for a tryout will be announced at a later date.

East Liverpool golfer in 1st at Windmill Lakes

RAVENNA

Isaac Davidson of East Liverpool shot a 2-over par 72 to tie Justin Roth of Brunswick for first place in the 16-19 year-old division of a Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf event Tuesday at Windmill Lakes Golf Course.

Donovan Ray of Warren was tied for fifth with a 76 and Joey Cilone of East Liverpool was tied for eighth with a 77. On the girls’ side, Alexa Tringhese of Columbiana shot an 89, good for sixth place.
