Staff report

WARREN

The Warren City Wide Youth Choir will begin its summer concert season and fundraising campaign with a preview show at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Agape Assembly Church, 426 Nevada Ave. SW.

The event will feature ministry from individuals and groups of participating churches as well as a mini-concert by the WCWY Choir. Admission is free, but an offering will be taken to raise funds for summer activities.

The choir began in 2011 with 60 participants and has since grown to more than 100 youths, teens and young adults from Warren and surrounding areas.

Its goal is to promote unity, combat negative behavior, provide a forum for positive expression of musical gifts and the arts, and encourage educational excellence through a scholarship fund.

In less than three years, the choir has grown its scholarship awards from $1,000 to more than $5,000.

Last year, the choir performed as the opening act for national gospel recording artist and Grammy Award winner Israel Houghton and New Breed at Packard Music Hall.

The choir will present its annual summer concert July 27 at 6 p.m. at the Warren Community Amphitheater.

The choir’s activities and events are funded entirely by donations from individuals, businesses and organizations. It is seeking sponsorships to offset expenses and raise funds for the 2014-15 scholarship.

The choir also has a crowd-funding page at gofundme.com where contributions are being accepted.

If interested in becoming a sponsor or donor, contact Pastor Todd Johnson at 330-883-7456 or TJohnson@AgapeAssembly.com. Johnson is also the organizer and director of the choir.

The choir is open to all young people in the Warren area. Rehearsals are at Agape Assembly Church.
