Hubbard junior Hill commits to Buckeyes

HUBBARD

Hubbard High School junior George Hill has verbally committed to play football for Ohio State University.

Hill has played running back, wide receiver, safety and cornerback for the Eagles. Last fall, he rushed for more than 1,200 yards and scored 17 touchdowns.

Scrappers thumped by Jamestown, 9-4

JAMESTOWN, N.Y.

Jamestown struck for six runs in the second inning and added three more in the fifth on the way to a 9-4 rout of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Sunday in New York-Penn League action.

The Scrappers battled back with three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Jorge Martinez doubled and singled and drove in two runs for the Scrappers and Yonathan Mendoza also had two hits and drove in a run.

Mahoning Valley concludes the season-opening series at Jamestown today (11:05 a.m.) and then comes home to Eastwood Field on Tuesday for the home opener at 7:05 p.m. against Auburn.

Services set for ex-Steelers coach Noll

PITTSBURGH

Funeral arrangements have been set for former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck Noll. A public viewing was scheduled Sunday evening at John A. Freyvogel Sons in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The funeral home’s website says visitation is also being held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.

Noll died of natural causes Friday at his home near Pittsburgh. He was 82. The Hall of Fame coach won four Super Bowl titles with the Steelers. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland.

A person familiar with the Cavaliers’ coaching search says the team will interview former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt on Wednesday. Blatt stepped down from his job with the European champions last week, saying he will accept an unspecified job in the NBA. Blatt also is believed to be contemplating a job as an assistant’s with Golden State under new coach Steve Kerr.

TCU spoils Texas Tech’s CWS debut

OMAHA, Neb.

Boomer White drove in the go-ahead run in a dramatic eighth inning, and TCU beat Big 12 rival Texas Tech 3-2 in the College World Series on Sunday. In the second game, Mike Papi’s RBI double into right-center with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Virginia a 2-1 victory over Mississippi. The win came after Nathan Kirby and Artie Lewicki combined for the first one-hitter at the CWS since 1983.

TCU, the No. 7 national seed, moves to a Tuesday game against Virginia. Texas Tech, in the CWS for the first time, will play Ole Miss Tuesday afternoon.

Federer beats Falla in Wimbledon tuneup

Roger Federer delivered a statement of intent for Wimbledon on Sunday by winning the grass-court Gerry Weber Open for the seventh time. Federer fired five aces and saved three of the five break points he faced to defeat Alejandro Falla 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) in the final. It was the 14th title on grass and 79th overall for the 32-year-old Swiss. The seven-time Wimbledon champion improved to 46-5 in 12 appearances at the tournament where he made his debut 14 years ago.
