Dads deserve respect, thanks

Since time immemorial, American dads have gotten a bad rap. They typically play second-fiddle to moms. Many are brushed with a broad stroke as “deadbeats.” And, as a group, they often remain caricatured as aloof and lazy slobs.

Fortunately, many of those stereotypes are eroding as attitudes adjust to view fathers as the important and positive role models they are for their children.

This Father’s Day is prime time for children of all ages to recognize dear old dad for the many sacrifices he made and words of wisdom he imparted to shape our lives. Take time out of the gift-giving and barbecuing to give a heart-felt thanks to your father today. But don’t make this the only day you recognize his significance.
