Pikunas wins Hudson Junior Invitational

HUDSON

Eased by a round of 4-under par 68 on day two, Boardman’s Jacinta Pikunas cruised to the biggest tournament win of her young career on Thursday by winning the Hudson Junior Invitational.

Pikunas, who just finished her freshman year at Boardman High School, shot 74-68-74 at The Country Club of Hudson for a score of even-par for the tournament.

The result comes just days after she qualified for The Vindicator Greatest Golfer of the Valley junior championship.

All Star Circuit hits Sharon Speedway

On June 24, Sharon Speedway will host the All Star Circuit of Champions as part of the 32nd annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

Qualifying for the race will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the races to follow.

Tickets will go on sale starting at 4 p.m. the day of the race. Pit passes are available for $35.

An adult ticket is $22 and kids 13 and under get in free.

TCTA sponsoring three tennis tourneys

The Trumbull County Tennis Association has three tournaments left for the summer. The tournaments will take place at Packard Park in Warren.

The revenues from the tournaments will be used toward scholarships for some of the selected participants going to college.

The three tounaments include the AVI Classic, June 23-29, Panera Bread Tournament, July 16-20 and the Gary Dieter Memorial, August 5-10.

Fever’s Dunn gets Hall of Fame honor

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

Indiana Fever coach Lin Dunn is back in her home state to receive her biggest honor yet as she nears the conclusion of an illustrious career.

Dunn, who will retire from coaching at the end of the season, is being inducted Saturday into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Dunn, a Nashville native, still has plenty of ties to Tennessee.

Dunn went 447-257 in a 25-year college head coaching career with stops at Austin Peay, Mississippi, Miami and Purdue. She also has coached the ABL’s Portland Power and the WNBA’s Seattle Storm and Indiana Fever. She led Indiana to the 2012 WNBA title.

This year’s induction class also includes former players Michelle Edwards, Yolanda Griffith and Jasmina Perazic, broadcaster Mimi Griffin, and former Southern Illinois women’s athletic director Charlotte West.

Texans’ Clowney has sports hernia surgery

Jadeveon Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft by the Houston Texans, is recovering from sports hernia surgery.

Coach Bill O’Brien disclosed the procedure Friday, saying Clowney had been struggling with a groin issue. He says the standout from South Carolina was sent to a specialist in Philadelphia and it was determined that surgery was the best option. The surgery was performed Thursday. O’Brien says he expects Clowney to be ready for training camp, which begins in late July.
