Feast Day planned

Feast Day planned

YOUNGSTOWN

The vigil of St. John the Baptist Feast Day will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. June 23 with a bonfire at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave.

The Rev. Ed Noga will conduct the service of prayers and ceremonial burning of old rosaries, prayer books and statues.

The Latino band Conjunto Rique ±a will play after the prayer service. Hot dogs will be served; families are asked to bring an ethnic “potluck” dish to share, if possible. Bring lawn chairs or blankets.

June 24 marks the celebration of the birthday of St. John the Baptist, and it falls exactly six months before Christmas. John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin. Many years ago, in places from Ireland and Latvia to Mexico and Puerto Rico, symbolic bonfires were lighted at the vigil of St. John the Baptist’s birthday. It is called “midsummer” or “summer Christmas” in some countries.
