Janis Jones at jazz series show

Soulful songstress Janis Jones will perform at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown, as part of a special Father’s Day edition of the Second Sundays jazz series.

A dinner will be prepared by Guy’s Catering, and Columbiana charity the Way Station will be honored. Tickets are available at Joe Maxx Coffee (Downtown), Goldie’s Flowers on Belmont Avenue, and Excalibur Barber Grooming Lounge in Southern Park Mall, or online at secondsundays.net. Admission is $25 (couples, $45) at the door.

Known throughout the region, Jones’ vocal range extends from Anita Baker to Chaka Khan. The Youngstown resident has backed national artists Regina Belle and Kim Burrell and has written, performed and recorded with SounDoctrine, Penny Eldridge and the Carvel Austin Experience.

The daughter of the late, legendary Hump Jones, she is best known for her recent work as a choir director and lead vocalist for many area churches.

She is working on her first solo record, “This is Me!”

Second Sundays’ partnership with Derek Emerson, owner and operator of the Southern Park Mall Chick-Fil-A, will raise money for the Way Station this month.

The Way Station is a faith based, private nonprofit dedicated to the healing of addiction, poverty, abuse and related social and spiritual issues.

The Father’s Day event will include additional music by DJ Phil the Beat, door prizes and gift sets for dad.
