Car sales in the Mahoning Valley were down in May, but not by much.
The Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio data released Tuesday shows there were 5,973 cars sold last month compared with 6,004 in May 2013.
The leader in sales for new and used cars, Greenwood Chevrolet of Austintown, however, showed an increase in sales for May, with 316 sold this year and 272 sold last year.
“I am very pleased to hear that because it is a competitive marketplace,” said Greg Greenwood, dealership owner and operator. “It doesn’t hurt to be the top dealer in the area when your No. 1 car is built right down the street in Lords-town.”
The Chevrolet Cruze was the top new model for May with 219 sold, compared with 143 last year.
Greenwood said the Cruze remains the best-selling car at the dealership.
“It is an amazing car,” he said. “There are a lot of happy customers in that car.”
The Chevrolet Malibu took second for best-selling new model in the Valley with 133 sold in May compared with 137 sold last year.
The Malibu did take first for best-selling used-car model in the Valley, with 102 sold in May compared with 101 sold last year.
Chevrolet was the leader for the most new cars sold with 749 in May. Ford came in second with 366, and Honda came in third with 121.
Sweeney Chevrolet of Boardman came in second place for the number of new and used cars sold with 246, and Bob and Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Austintown came in third with 230.
