115-lb. woman wins Illinois hot-dog-eating contest

BLOOMINGDALE, Ill.

Michelle Lesco is petite, but the 115-pound competitive eater still managed to gobble down more than 28 hot dogs — and buns — to win an eating contest in suburban Chicago.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reported that the Arizona native won a recent qualifiers for the July 4 hot dog-eating contest at New York’s Coney Island.

The competition in Bloomingdale, about 20 miles from Chicago, was one more than a dozen preliminary rounds before the main event. Eight people faced off to see who could eat the most hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Lesco set a new Illinois record and beat Eric “Badlands” Booker, who gobbled more than 27 hot dogs. He weighs about four times that of Lesco.

After winning, Lesco said: “I can’t wait to burp.”

Police confiscate $3M worth of shoes from Kentucky home

RADCLIFF, Ky.

Police are investigating after finding $3 million worth of missing shoes at a central Kentucky home.

Media outlets report that officers with the Radcliff Police Department confiscated thousands of pairs of Nike shoes that were scattered in front of the home.

According to a search warrant filed last week, the shoes were supposed to be shipped in 2009 from a Nike distribution center in Tennessee to another one in Texas, but never made it.

The women who were in possession of the shoes said they had purchased them from someone else and didn’t know they were stolen. They said they were selling them at a flea market.

Police are investigating. No arrests have been made.

German shepherd puppy drives car into Mass. pond

CANTON, Mass.

After going for a walk, a German shepherd puppy owned by a Massachusetts man decided to go for a drive — straight into a pond.

John Costello told WFXT-TV that his 12-week-old puppy, Rosie, was so excited last week after going for a walk at Bolivar Pond in Canton that she jumped in his running car, hit the gear stick and shifted into drive, before falling onto the gas pedal and sending the car careening into the water.

A couple of passers-by saw the commotion and helped Costello rescue Rosie. Nobody was injured, but Costello says the Dodge Neon is a total loss.

The 911 call surprised even police. Officer Robert Quirk says he has never heard of a dog driving into a pond.
