Storm spawns twisters in Colo.

AURORA, Colo.

A line of severe storms packing high winds and hail swept across Colorado’s Front Range and eastern plains Sunday, spawning several damaging tornadoes, including one that dropped down near a junior golf tournament southeast of Denver, weather officials said.

Seven tornadoes occurred, five in northeast Colorado and two in Park County in the center of the state, and three produced damage, the National Weather Service said on its website.

The band of storms would make its way into central Nebraska and western Kansas between 9 p.m. and midnight Sunday, Weather Service meteorologist Frank Cooper said. The storms will stick around the area this morning before moving into Arkansas and Missouri.

Ex-military chief becomes president

CAIRO

Egypt’s former military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, winner by a landslide in last month’s presidential election, was sworn into office Sunday nearly a year after he ousted the nation’s first freely elected leader.

The retired field marshal called for unity and hard work, while vowing that there would be no reconciliation with those who took up arms against the government and Egyptians. That was a thinly veiled reference to supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Islamist president el-Sissi removed last July, and Islamic militants waging attacks against the government.

DUBLIN

Ireland should investigate the Catholic Church’s mistreatment and burial of babies who died decades ago in nun-operated homes for unmarried mothers, a senior church official declared Sunday as the country confronted another shameful chapter of its history of child abuse.

Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin made his appeal after revelations that hundreds of children who died inside a former church-run residence for infants were buried in unmarked graves at the site in western Ireland.
