Protecting watersheds

The Alliance for Watershed Action & Resource Education group was among the variety of environmental entities at the Friends of the Mahoning River’s third annual Riverfest gathering Saturday at the B&O Station Banquet Hall in Youngstown. The 15-year-old organization shared several tips on how people can help watershed areas, among them:

Installing rain barrels at home.

Planting rain gardens.

Removing pet waste.

Using lawn fertilizer with no phosphates.

Keeping storm drains clear of sediment and debris.

Protecting streams with native-plant buffers.
