Help for the Hurting

Teen Straight Talk and local pastors will host “Help for the Hurting,” a family conference, starting with a banquet at 6 p.m. today at DiVieste Banquet Room, 754 North River Road. It continues at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with a conference for adults and children.

The banquet will feature Bishop Joey Johnson, author of “God is Greater Than Family Mess.” He is founder and senior pastor of The House Of The Lord Church in Akron.

Saturday’s conference includes breakfast and a panel discussion for adults on a variety of topics. Other sessions will be for youths.

For information or reservations, call 330-539-6040. Cost for today’s session is $30 per adult and $15 per child age 12 and under. Cost for the Saturday session is $15 per person.

Scrap tire drop-off

HOWLAND

A scrap-tire drop-off for Howland residents will be today, Monday to next Friday and Oct. 6 to 10. Residents may drop off up to eight passenger tires with no rims at the Public Works Department, 3600 North River Road, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Motown trip answers

YOUNGSTOWN

L.K. Williams, acting adviser for the local NAACP Youth Council, will be at the Newport branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 3730 Market St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday to answer questions about the upcoming Aug. 15 trip to Detroit to visit the Motown Museum, African American Museum and attend the African World Festival.

Equipment vandalized

BOARDMAN

Vandals caused major damage to a local company’s excavator.

According to a police report, employers of Walters Paving, 5801 Southern Blvd., found one of their excavators with a window broken out Wednesday morning. After driving the vehicle a short distance, the motor began to smoke and shut off.

Upon looking at the motor, the oil plug had been removed and the oil from the motor drained out, causing engine damage.

Company officials estimated damage at $15,000.
