Several area athletes earn all-state honors
At least four area spring sports athletes have been selected first-team all-Ohio by the coaches in their respective sports.
Poland seniors Garrett Gardner (tennis) and Taylor Miokovic (softball) both earned Division II first-team honors. Junior softball pitchers Makayla Shore of Ursuline (Division III) and Cheyenne Eggens of Mathews (Division IV) earned the honor in their respective enrollment divisions.
Second-team all-Ohio softball players from the area include senior outfielder Bailey McElwain of West Branch and junior pitcher Aleah Hughes of Western Reserve. Honorable mention softball honors went to Austintown Fitch senior outfielder Cali Mikovich in Division I, Canfield junior infielder Rachel Tinkey in Division II and, in Division III, Ursuline senior infielder Macey Gunther and LaBrae junior pitcher Emily Dugan.
General Assembly cites YSU baseball success
Youngstown State head baseball coach Steve Gillispie accepted a resolution on Wednesday at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus commending his team for winning the 2014 Horizon League baseball tournament as well as earning a victory in the NCAA Tournament.
Gillispie was presented with the framed resolution at the start of the final session of the 130th General Assembly. The resolution was written and presented by Senator Joe Schiavoni of District 33, which includes Mahoning and Columbiana counties.
High school baseball all-star classic June 14

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers will host the second annual High School Valley All-Star Classic on June 14 at Eastwood Field.
The event is presented by Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods and media partners 21 WFMJ and WBCB. The High School Valley All-Star Classic will feature elite high school players from the Mahoning Valley.

Longtime baseball fixture Zimmer dies
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
Don Zimmer, a popular fixture in professional baseball for 66 years as a manager, player, coach and executive, has died. He was 83. Zimmer was still working for the Tampa Bay Rays as a senior adviser but had been in a rehabilitation center in Florida since having heart surgery in mid-April.
After starting as a minor league infielder in 1949, Zimmer went on to have one of the longest-lasting careers in baseball history. Zimmer played for the only Brooklyn Dodgers team to win the World Series and the original New York Mets, and nearly managed the Boston Red Sox to a championship in the 1970s.
Finlay scores late, Crew tie Real Salt Lake 1-1

Ethan Finlay scored in the 88th minute to give the Columbus Crew (4-5-5) a 1-1 tie with Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night. Finlay, who entered in the 77th minute, took a through-ball from Ben Speas on the right side and dribbled just inside the penalty area before chipping over goalkeeper Jeff Attinella. Finley has scored all three of his career goals in the past four games.
Warren Striders plan hurdles, sprints clinics
WARREN
The Warren Striders will conduct several “Learn by Doing” mini-clinics for hurdles and sprints. Students in fifth grade through high school age can register to learn hurdle techniques, sprint mechanics and block starts. Fees are $160 for four sessions per event (hurdles or sprints). A non-refundable deposit of $80 is due by Monday to hold one of 25 slots for each event on a “first- come” basis. The balance will be due at the second clinic session on Wednesday.
The clinics are scheduled Monday, Wednesday, June 16 and June 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Warren JFK High track.
