WARREN
The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra has begun a sub-scription campaign for its 2014-15 concert schedule.
The WPO, led by music director Susan Davenny Wyner, will perform two concerts, plus several special school concerts. The two concerts will begin at 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE. The school concerts will be at Lakeview High School.
Subscriptions purchased before Sept. 30 are $45 ($40 for seniors, $20 for students), and $50 ($45, $25) afterward. Children under age 13 are admitted free, with parent or guardian.
Each subscription will include one free ticket for the 2014-15 season that can be used for either concert. Tickets also will be sold at the door.
The first concert will be “A Magic Firebird!” on Nov. 9. The program will include “Don Juan, or the Stone Guest’s Banquet” by Christoph Willibald von Gluck; Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra in E-flat major, K. 364 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with soloists Hristo Popov, violin, and Samuel Rotberg, viola; “The Empire Strikes Back” by John Williams; and “The Firebird Suite” by Igor Stravinsky.
In addition, prize-winning Music in Art contest winners will be recognized, and art works of these Trumbull County students will be on display in the lobby. An instrumental petting zoo — where attendees can have hands-on experience with instruments and talk with performers — will take place during intermission.
On April 12, 2015, the WPO will present “The Power of Fate.” The program will consist of The Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet and Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Soloists for the Bach are Chris Krummel, trumpet; Kathryn Thomas Umbel, flute; Martin Neubert, oboe; and Hristo Popov, violin. The orchestra also will perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36.
The orchestra also will collaborate with Warren City Schools for the Strings of Joy program, where middle-school students in the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program are eligible for free stringed instrument lessons.
