POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Hubbard, Liberty and Girard:

HUBBARD

May 28

Harassment: A West Liberty Street man reported a 19-year-old Hubbard man posted such Facebook messages about him, including a threat to beat him up.

Stolen property: Officers stopped a truck near South Main and Clingan streets and charged 34-year-old Ralph M. Meta of Hamilton Avenue, Poland, and Brad A. Ruozzo, 30, of Morley Avenue, Campbell, with receiving stolen property after saying they had in the truck steel collars that had been taken from a Wheatland, Pa., company’s trash bin. Ruozzo also faced two misdemeanor drug charges when, authorities said, he had a bag containing two syringes, a suspected crack-cocaine pipe and a spoon with burn marks common in drug use.

June 1

Child endangerment: Police issued a summons to James R. Vavrinak, 45, of Saul Drive, Hubbard, charging him with child endangering after a witness reported seeing a 3-year-old girl fall out of a minivan near Saul and Doris drives. Vavrinak told police he was traveling about 5 mph when the child opened the passenger-side door and fell; he also admitted she had not been in a child-safety seat, a report said. The girl was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley in Boardman.

Harassment: A Clingan Street man said an 18-year-old Sharon, Pa., woman made and sent insulting and threatening calls and text messages, including a threat to slit his neck.

LIBERTY

May 26

Arrest: A traffic stop in the 3400 block of Hadley Avenue resulted in 27-year-old April Bush’s arrest. Bush, of Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Girard, was wanted on three warrants charging her with two counts of theft and one of possession of dangerous drugs.

Theft: Officers responded to a shoplifting situation at Walmart, 200 Goldie Road, and charged 37-year-old Jesse R. Spragling with criminal trespassing and possession of drug-abuse instruments after alleging Spragling, of Sherwood Avenue, Youngstown, had a syringe in a bag. He also had been given a trespassing warning to stay out of the store, a report said.

May 27

Arrest: Youngstown State University police apprehended 58-year-old Daryl G. Brown of Miltonia Avenue, Youngstown. He was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court to face a theft charge.

Recovered property: A 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt was found abandoned in the 300 block of Goldie Road after having been reported stolen in Youngstown.

May 28

Assault: Authorities charged 58-year-old Charles P. Serafino of Hadley Avenue, Liberty, with assault on a police officer, obstructing official business and resisting arrest after having tried to pull Serafino over near his residence. A combative Serafino fled to his home and twice slammed a door on an officer’s left hand, a report showed.

May 29

Harassment: An Ardmore Drive man said his 36-year-old daughter, of Boardman, has made and sent him vulgar calls and text messages.

Arrest: Brookfield police apprehended and turned over Wayne E. Perry of Kenilworth Avenue, Warren, to township authorities. Perry, 21, was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant charging theft.

May 30

Arrest: Authorities took 34-year-old Jamie Seaman of Russell Avenue, Youngstown, into custody near Interstate 80 on an outstanding township warrant.

Theft: A Youngstown woman noticed her purse and cellphone missing from her room at a Belmont Avenue motel.

Theft: A .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun was stolen from a home in the 20 block of Scott Lane.

Arrest: Authorities received information about a disheveled woman having been punched then thrown from a vehicle near Tibbetts-Wick Road, where they took into custody 30-year-old Tammy J. Vanfossen of First Street, Youngstown. She was wanted on a city warrant accusing her of failing to appear in court on a larceny charge.

May 31

Arrest: Police in the 2700 block of Belmont Avenue picked up Emmanuel I. Simpson of Sampson Drive, Liberty. The 26-year-old Simpson was accused of failing to appear in court.

Recovered property: A township firefighter reported someone found and gave him a disturbing handwritten letter stating the author’s intent to kill several people.

Robbery: Charges of robbery, public indecency and felony domestic violence were pending against a 38-year-old Youngstown man after a woman reported the intoxicated man had exposed himself and urinated in front of her and a group of people in a public area off Trumbull Avenue. Also, the woman told police he grabbed her hair; a second victim alleged the man punched him and attempted to steal the accuser’s bicycle when he tried to help the woman.

Indecency: Authorities responded to a person possibly panhandling for money in the 3500 block of Belmont Avenue, where they charged Thomas C. Jozwiak, 50, of Akron with public indecency after saying Jozwiak was intoxicated and was exposing himself when police arrived.

GIRARD

May 28

Theft: A woman discovered two checkbooks and a check missing from her East Main Street apartment.

May 29

Harassment: An Ohio Avenue woman said a man made profane, threatening calls to her after claiming the accuser had struck his car.

Theft: A $500 lawn mower was removed from a home in the 600 block of Trumbull Avenue.

May 30

Harassment: An Oak Street man told officers he received five to 10 calls that were insulting in nature and had originated from Wisconsin.

May 31

Theft: A woman reported her purse missing while at a store in the 900 block of North State Street.

June 1

Theft: A $600 iPhone was removed from a car in the 100 block of West Second Street.

Theft: A swimming-pool filter and pump were stolen from a residence in the 800 block of Lawrence Avenue.

Animal cruelty: Juveniles in the 1500 block of Squaw Creek Drive reportedly threw rocks at and injured three ducks, one severely.

June 2

Assault: A Joan Avenue woman alleged that during an argument, her uncle grabbed her neck and threatened her.

Menacing: A Trumbull Avenue woman reported hearing secondhand that someone had threatened to beat up her 13-year-old daughter.

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into Expresso Market, 143 E. Liberty St., through a rear door, cut the phone lines to dismantle the alarm system and took an undisclosed sum of money.
